How to get more exercise to stop gout

Staying active is one of the best things you can do to keep gout at bay.

Even just 20 minutes of exercise per day is enough to support heart health by increasing circulation and lowering blood pressure.

Adding exercise into your daily routine will help you lose weight which is one of the best ways to prevent gout attacks.

But being active during a gout attack can be difficult and at times impossible.

This is why it’s so important to get into an active routine before you have a gout attack which can often render people immobile due to the pain.

Keep it Simple

Exercise doesn’t have to be difficult.

At its simplest, a 20-30 minute walk every day will do wonders for your overall health.

Whether you go for a walk around your neighbourhood, the local park or on a treadmill – it doesn’t matter. Just move!

Motivation

It can be difficult to motivate yourself to exercise if it’s not already part of your daily routine.

Motivate yourself by being able to say goodbye to gout. Surely the pain of gout is a good enough incentive to fit in a few minutes of exercise every day, right?

Look Forward to It

It’s easier to motivate yourself to do something if you look forward to it.

One of the best things I’ve found for motivation – apart from getting healthier – is to listen to podcasts when I’m out for my morning walk.

Podcasts are great to do light exercise to like walking because they are often available in bite-sized chunks of around 30 minutes which means you should be able to fit in a podcast into the minimum daily exercise requirement.

Podcasts come in many flavours – business, true crime, comedy and many more – so find one that suits your personality and interests and listen to it ONLY when you exercise.

The secret is not listening to it at any other time so you always look forward to the next episode when it’s time for your daily exercise.

Keep Track

Another key for motivation is keeping track of your progress. This can come in many different forms depending on the exercise you do so it may be distance walked, average speed run etc.

Apart from trying to get faster or go longer, one of the best motivators is consistency. How many days in a row can you do? Can you do 5 days a week for 4 weeks without missing a day?

Consistency helps to form a habit, and habits become routine.

Get through the first couple of weeks and it becomes much easier to do what you need to do.

Gadgets

There are a lot of fitness trackers on the market. Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin all make amazing devices to track your exercise, heart rate, steps and even let you listen to music or podcasts while you’re doing it.

Another great investment to go with a smart watch is a pair of wireless bluetooth earbuds such Apple Airpods.

With no wires to get tangled, it makes exercise a lot easier and they are so light you forget you’re wearing them. Expensive, but worth it.
